I do not own an iPhone...yet. I didn't originally buy into the iPhone-hype. Lately however, I have been more and more interested in picking one up. What I like most about Apple in general is that they do focus on the average user. The tools that are available on the iPhone are so useful due to the fact that they aren't simply "cool tools." They are tools that are useful on a daily basis. Most of the mobile tools that I found to be most useful are offered for the iPhone and not for my phone. I never thought I would use RSS feeds like I use them today. Now, my daily schedule is similar to the one you described. I'm not sure if they are catching on but they have for me. It seems like every site out there has an RSS feed you can subscribe to. I'm very selective of which informational sites I frequently visit.
